Welcome to the second of our conversations with key leaders from across Elevate. This time, we’ve been talking to Head of Infrastructure Operations, Leah Hobson about unpredictability, organisation and advice for future leaders.
Building a career and team from the ground up
Leah spent her entire career in the telecoms, steadily climbing from entry-level positions to joining Elevate and managing a team that oversees significant infrastructure projects. From the early days at Carillion to her current role with us, via a stint at M247, here’s a look at Leah’s career journey to date.
It’s all about experience
Leah’s early years managing high profile clients like Bruntwood, honed her skills in project management and set up her organised approach for life. Following a solid five-year stint at M247, she transitioned to Elevate, and she’s been with us for nearly six years. But her story doesn’t follow the ‘typical’ trajectory.
"I didn't go to university - I started working straight from college, and that experience has shaped everything I do." Leah’s first job at Carillion started with working evenings and weekends before she eventually took on a full-time position. "I’ve always believed that hands-on experience can teach you just as much as a formal education.."
Building a department
Overseeing over 500 kms of fibre installation is no mean feat. Leah’s journey began with the first cable being laid, and today, she’s overseeing one of the company’s most critical functions. But in her time at Elevate, Leah’s proudest achievement is the department she’s built.
“I was one of the first to start this department, and every piece of infrastructure and fibre we’ve installed has been under my leadership or with the help of my incredible team.”
Unpredictability and the personal touch
Leah’s day always begins with a team check in. "The first thing I do is make sure everyone’s okay.” She then reviews her calendar... “My job’s unpredictable, so I need to be ready for any curveballs.” And the success of Leah’s team is personal. “They’re motivated, dedicated, and just the easiest group of people to work with. We’ve built something special together.”
Football and family
Outside work, Leah spends a lot of time with her dog, Bonnie, a nearly 18-month-old retriever who keeps her busy with walks and playtime. She’s also a big football fan, although she won’t share which team she supports, and she’s a qualified coach who has previously managed a girls’ football team in Manchester.
Advice for future leaders
For anyone aspiring to follow a similar career path, Leah’s advice is to focus on personal development.
“When I started, I was young, but I was always clear about what I wanted. From a young age, I had a mentor who helped me map out my development. I set goals for myself, created a to-do list, and worked relentlessly toward them.”
“This is the first year I don’t have a formal PDP because I’ve already achieved everything I set out to do. But I still make time to work on my personal growth. It’s essential to always be learning and growing.”
